Chamisa Clips Mwonzora Wings
MDC leader Nelson Chamisa‘s National Council has appointed individuals who shall occupy the all powerful National Executive Council, with former Secretary-General Douglas Mwonzora‘s influence in the MDC heavily curtailed.
Mwonzora, who had ambitions to challenge Chamisa for the party presidency towards Congress before pulling out in protest, has been appointed to a deputy secretary of a very peripheral and inconsequential portfolio of International Relations.
Mwonzora’s boss in that portfolio will be Gladys Hlatshwayo, a lightweight in the MDC power matrix compared to Mwonzora.
“He’s been baby dumped for showing ambition,” an internal source told ZOOMZimbabwe.
“Mwonzora will spend the whole next five years working for the external outlook of the party and unable to build any local structures. Politics in Zimbabwe is played internally on the ground and not externally. Mwonzora’s teeth have effectively been knocked out.”
Chamisa has also given influential positions to less vocal stalwarts such as Hwange legislator Daniel Molokele who becomes the MDC spokesperson henceforth.
ZOOMZimbabwe is reliably informed that Mafume’s roles are loosely defined and he could clash with Organising Secretary Amos Chibaya as Chibaya’s portfolio also has a mandate to prepare structures for elections.
Also hugely rewarded for his loyalty is Morgen Komichi, who lost the MDC vice presidential race to Tendai Biti and Welshman Ncube. Komichi will work close to Chamisa after a new portfolio has created for him: Secretary for Planning in the President’s Office.More on ZOOMZimbabwe… EU, USA worried about lack of democracy, rule of law in Chamisa’s MDC
Komichi is deputised by Lillian Timveous, another Chamisa ally.
Elias Mudzuri, a former party Vice president, will lead the newly created portfolio of Secretary for Local Government.
Chamisa has also rewarded cadres Happymore Chidziva and ambition-less Dr Tapiwa Mashakada.
